Theory & Hazard Perception Test
The Theory Test was introduced on 1st July 1996. Why? Because drivers who have an understanding of the theory of driving will make better, and therefore safer drivers. It should be taught together with and integrated with your practical lessons by your Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
The test is presented on a touch screen system on computer terminals at the theory test centre. To book your theory test call 0300-200-1122 and have your credit/debit card ready. You can also book on line at Driving Standards Agency. It is available in Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Kurdish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdi, and Welsh. If circumstances require, it can be conducted on a one-to-one basis with a human asking the questions.
Calm yourself down, then when you are ready, start answering the questions. There are 50 questions and you have to get 43 correct, in 57 minutes. Read each question CAREFULLY. Look at the answers. Some are obviously wrong, some are quite silly. From the others carefully choose one or more, as the case may be, as being correct.
Topics covered will be :- alertness, attitude, safety and your vehicle and safety margins, hazard awareness, road users who are vulnerable, other types of vehicle, vehicle handling, motorway rules and general rules of the road, documents to do with motoring, accidents, correct vehicle loading/pulling trailers, and from 1st July 2003, a broad range of questions covering mechanical safety and maintenance
On November 14th 2002, there was introduced a new Hazard Perception Test, which is tagged on to the end of the theory test, this takes about 15 minutes extra and is a series of video clips during each of which the candidate is asked to identify what has the potential for developing into a hazard, amongst many other harmless things that may be going on. There are up to five marks per clip, based on correct assessment and time taken to identify the hazard. The pass rate required for this is 44. If you fail this, you fail the whole theory test.
